I assume you got that one in color from eBay where it is being offered as a weathered sign with the line "Toluca, Mont.-Cody, Wyo. Line" beneath it, which you have wisely cropped off, since that line was not built until 1901, when the rectangular herald had been in use for 16 years.  But its similarity to the version in the 1879 Railway Age leads me to believe it was in fact used by the company at some point, likely around 1880, though I've never seen it on anything from that period.  But the people selling it certainly didn't create it themselves, though they may have added the color.

The advert with the “herald” appeared in the Railway Age in 1879 and the stylised logo in an advert in the Railway Review in 1881.

Do you know if the attached design “Herald old” was an official herald?  If so, any idea of a date?

Here's an 1885 piece that shows that "Burlington Route" was regularly being used before the advent of the herald later that same year.
