I remember reading in a book (written by a man that had been a stock feeder in western Kansas in the early 20's) about him sorting his stock for shipment. He was trying to group the hogs so that the animals would hit prime price sizes after shrinkage. He would try to hold (in his lots) those that did not fit the 3 or 4 prime size spreads for later shipments or to sell them to local butchers. He was usually shipping to either Omaha or Kansas City via the Q. Of course shrinkage varied depending on weather and season.

From my reading there was a love/hate relationship between the farmers, ag co-ops, elevators, stockmen, feed lot operators and the Railroad. The growth and prosperity of each was interdependent. What helped one prosper was not necessarily good for the others.

Road based motorized transportation changed all of that and of course totally changed the railroads.

At least in this case since the grain was shipped by the elevator company the farmer avoided a direct loss.

Although farmers as a group probably suffered an indirect loss based on what the elevators paid for grain delivered from the the farm.

Of course in the case of elevators that were owned as a co-op the loss was more direct.
