Good start. You are in the correct place to begin the search. What you want to do now that you have the link opened is to look for a place to type in the location, "Plainfield, IL". You will find that box about an inch or so down the left margin. A new screen will open and you can search the bottom of the screen to click on a year. The colors correspond to the map magnification. Finally, you can adjust the magnification somewhat by finding the +/- indicators on the map screen. Works great once you get the hang of it. I also tried to find and zoom in on East Dubuque, IL for 1955. Now all I need to do is figure out how to order the USGS map for that area and year.

I don’t know what you are seeing on the link, but when I click on it, I am looking at greater New Orleans, Louisiana, not gravel pits around Plainfield.
