Scott,
I model the C&S Ry. in 1958 (HO Scale)
and I find the Accurail 55-ton hopper kits to be the best match for my
needs. They have good detail matching the 1919 run of 18000-series
hoppers for the C&S. I’m going to upgrade them a bit with
internal bracing and exterior brake line, but they are great right off the
assembly bench.
Try to pick up a 6-pack if you can.
I was fortunately able to acquire four 6-packs when they came out. eBay
may be a good bet as I see them from time to time.

Subject: [CBQ] CB&Q Hopper Car
Models
I have a number of chinese red hopper cars and black
hopper cars, but not very many mineral red CB&Q hopper cars. I would
like to add some more HO scale steam era hoppers to pull behind my 2-10-2, but
there doesn't seem to be much available anymore. I do have some old
Athearn 55 ton 2 bay composite side cars, several Walthers HT-3 55 ton 2 bay
cars, as well as some Roundhouse 70 ton 3 bay cars in the mineral red paint
scheme. I see that Walthers has the HT-3 2 bay cars on sale right now,
but they have 9 ribs instead of the correct 7 ribs. Per the Athearn
website, the old Athearn and Roundhouse cars are no longer available.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to another source
of HO scale CB&Q hopper cars for this era? Or are the Walthers 2 bay
ribbed cars the only reasonably close option available? Maybe this is a
market opportunity for Q Connection or 5th Ave. Car Shops (hint, hint).
