An old time switch engine engineer used to complain to me that, "all these yards are laid out by 'civilized engineers' "!

One thing those modeling the C&I and Savanna might want to keep in mind was that,in my opinion, I have never seen a yard better designed for flat switching anywhere. All classification except maybe a rare setting over of a block of cars was done on the east end of the yard.

The yard NWs could pull out a track and switch it out in no time. The yard slopped very gently westward. All the switchman needed was the slack to let cars roll into the track desired. No kicking, running beyond the switch, excessive power to get cars to roll, etc needed. They almost never had to back up, just keep pulling pins and lining switches. It was actually a pleasure to sit on the bench in front of the yard office waiting for our train, and watch a yard crew switch.

Unlike just about everywhere else I saw.

James,

The tracks were connected to the River track well into the 80s. The Mt Morros jobs engine tied up on the River trk, just east of the Carnation switch so as to be out of the way for set outs and pickups and not get buried by cars.

Leo,

Thanks for letting me know. I was last in Oregon in September of 2005. While all the tracks were in place into the plant, they had no actual connection to the rest of the former CB&Q system, so were totally isolated.

I was trying to figure out when I model my version of Oregon, IL, if I could or should include the Carnation Milk Plant in my schemes for operations, but apparently, since I'm modeling 1988-1990, and they lost rail service the year I was born, there's no need for me to have those tracks in place on the module.

Best Regards

James
