>From my years (now long ago)working the C&I Desk in Cicero and Galesburg.  Both C&I and Galesburg inbound trains would make setouts and pickups in both directions.  Today it might be called block swapping.  Biggest problem from the DS stand point was we had to make sure the trains had enough power to make the hill right out of the gate at Savanna going up Burke Hill.
The turntable at Savanna was just like Eola a Thru-Truss 100 foot the only difference was Eola was new built in 1918 and installed in 1919.  Savanna was built in 1917 but had been installed and used at Galesburg until replaced in 1928.  The old 79.75 footer from Savanna went to 14th St.   Centralia and Beardstown also had the 100 ft. Thru-truss both new and installed in 1922-1923.  A total of 4 all the same size, make and model and electric drive.
The yard office changed over the years and for a while it had an addition of an old Gas-Electric body.
The chart(Manipulation not the display board)  for the tower use to be in the back room at the Little Q.  The tower had been out by the Jct switch to the Pea Vine.

Hi Leo and Fellow C&I Modelers,

I have a few more questions about Savanna. A few years ago I rail fanned the C&I but not for trains. I was getting pictures of industries, bridges, signals and track alignments.  I see enough trains at work so it was refreshing to shoot something different.

1. At Savanna what trains stopped to set out and pick up cars? Did they do block swapping?
2. What industries did the Q switch?
3. Was there any interchanging done with the Milwaukee Road?
4. When was the roundhouse torn down, size of turntable and location of yard office?

I’ve been thinking of how to get the slop of the yard so I can kick cars. I have some ideas of how to stop them. Just need to do it.

Thanks,
Randy Doman

Jonathan and fellow C&I Modelers,
A few years back a slide (of what my memory seems to recall as the Oregon  "Q" switcher) in nearly the same location but taken from a location a bit further east looking west came up for auction.  I believe the slide was being sold by WM Mike (Mike Sosalla)  on E-bay. It had a clear shot of the Oregon switcher on the "city job" track with the pot signal just off to the left of the engine.  I dropped out of the bidding somewhere around $30.00. After the auction I wrote and asked if Mike could share who bought the slide.  He had no record of the auction winner once the slide was mailed.  No duplicate copy either.  Perhaps someone in this group bought the slide and would be willing to share it with fellow C&I modelers in the group.

I just uploaded not a very good photo which shows the switcher stationed at the east end of the Oregon yard as a Great Northern passenger train passes through (June, 1962).
