Actually, most new scanners can do quite detailed scanning, and you should never use an automated program for scanning. If I ever get a chance to go to a Burlington meet, I'll offer to do a workshop on archival photo scanning.

In short:

* always scan docs at 3000 pixel MINIMUM on the long side.  Do more if you have the storage.

* use grayscale or 48 bit color (depending on photo type)

* always save using a lossless file type...tif is preferable

* you can use the scan software to adjust the photo, but be aware that it typically should be adjusted on a photo-by-photo basis.

I have found that when scanning older material these newer scanners are much more automated and you will lose a lot of information when scanning in black and white mode. This is the cheaper option. However if you use color or if they have a 256 step grey scale, you will capture everything. In many cases information is faded or did not transfer well from an original. Not to mention that in a lot of cases, the help has no idea,  or doesn't want to be bothered with it.

I find blueprint shops have the proper equipment and expertise. I have scanned a lot of bedroll documents using my blueprint shop at a competitive price. My minimum standards are 300 dpi (probably overkill) and 256 grey scale.

  You hang on to those drawings. They are priceless. Sadly so much has been lost over the years.  If you are near a college or university, perhaps they can help you in copying them. Declare the archival material which is no longer copyrighted if need be. You could also write the BNSF engineering and legal department asking what is proper and etc.
Be careful because legal departments are goofy. They may want them back. I would use a PO box and ghost name when inquiring. Dealt with a lot of that while I was practicing Pharmacy. Now retired from that crazy game.
  I don't have any idea how you could transmit copies to me at this time, but will check around.

I have full size copies of the erection drawings for the Q S4s and M4s that my dad obtained from the Mechanical Department in the mid 1950s. They are quite large (30 to 40 inches wide by 8 or so feet long) and the original from which the S4 was copied, was not in great shape at the time, but it is certainly legible. As for a live steam or electric version of either locomotive in 1:32 scale, I would certainly be interested, but I suspect the cost would be beyond my means! Like others, the Q hudsons were my all time favorite locomotives.
