Well I guess
you could say that..."some were and some weren't"...Some have
observed over the years that you can't expect "gentlemanly" conduct
when you put a man who has been  "rassling boxcars for 40 years until
he gets enough seniority to run a passenger train to be a "gentlemen"
at all times... 
 
I think that whether a guy is a
"gentleman" or not depends on his own personalty and moral
values....I had the privilege of working with both types.

Back in 1921, the Burlington’s vice-president announced that the Burlington was 
conducting a courtesy campaign among its
employes. He said "In the management of a property requiring 60,000
employes it is expecting too much that every one of them will be a 'perfect
gentleman,' but we are determined that the percentage of 'perfect gentlemen' in
our employ shall be as high as we can make it."
 
Are you suggesting that
the “old heads” were not perfect gentlemen?
