That is correct Leo...however...strictly ANECDOTAL info from my memory bank.
Summer 1956...braking on the Hastings-Huntley (MWF) and Hastings-Sutton (Tue
Th)-Lushton-Clay Center local.
We were late one evening coming back from Lushton and stopped on the siding
headed west next to the Lincoln-Hastings mainline (CTC).
It was time to eat before we went down to Clay Center...As we got off the
waycar the old head conductors said..."Be sure you turn your markers, Jim,
before we go uptown".
I knew it wasn't necessary, but do you think a 20 old kid brakeman would
dispute what an old head conductor told him to do..."deed not...
Old habits die hard and I was out to create a favorable impression on all whom
I served.

As further info. The turning of marker lamps applied in non CTC territory.

John,
Yes, I understand what you explained. Interesting "rules of the road" and
great details to store away for a final Jeopardy question. Thanks for taking
the time to give this clear explanation including the two actual operating
situations. Sounds like the final situation was one that must have been
observed when operating on the triple track mainline between Chicago and
Aurora. The situation you explained about a train being in a siding also
makes perfect sense as it would have told a crew overtaking the train on the
siding that it was clear on the main.

On the Q, marker lights displayed red to the rear and green to the sides and
front, except when the train was, in the clear, in a siding then they displayed
green to the rear and sides with the red turned in toward the way car and also
except when running "against the current of traffic", then the marker away from
the other running track had red to the rear and the marker adjacent to running
track displayed green to the rear. I hope that is clear enough for you, but I
doubt it.

Thanks for the fast reply. Now I can check off another part of the project. I
might also add that I have found some ultra small pre-wired "Pico" LED's that
slide right into the base of the Grandt Line O-Scale marker lamps(GL # 149).
The "Pico" LED's are about the size of a newly sharpened pencil tip and while
they don't cast a great deal of light like a headlight would I figure they
should be perfect for this application. More experimenting/testing tomorrow.
The new "Pico" LED's are available through Evan Designs of Brookfield, CO. (
http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/ ) I will add that I have no connection to
Evan Designs other than being a very satisfied return customer.

Subject: [CBQ] Waycar Marker Lamps
I am building an O-Scale model of a CB&Q NE-4 waycar. I have found some very
nice O-Scale Grandt Line marker lamps and lamp holders for the model. I would
like to get the correct orientation for the colored lenses of the marker lamps
at the rear of the waycar. I believe that the Q's practice was to have a red
lens protecting the rear of the train. Can anyone confirm the color of the
lenses to the sides and front? I have seen a color photo of a waycar in a
museum with a marker lamp at the rear that seems to be green to the sides. I
think some other railroads used yellow to indicate the sides of their cabooses.
So I would like to receive some confirmation of the Q's practice. Thanks in
advance for all help.
