I was a BN railroader that worked on the FW&D, the former CB&Q, NP and GN territory and I worked with motor cars quite a bit back then. I always heard them referred to as motor cars.
I also installed new jointed rail and was instructed to grease the joints when putting the bars on. That was only one roadmaster that wanted that done but I believe he was "by the book" and his father was a track official too. Of course in the seventies most new rail installation was ribbon rail. By the way we always called the bars "angle bars" not "joint bars" and I believe this is a carryover from the older bars that were "L" shaped.
I've often heard the term "motor" to refer to a diesel locomotive but I worked with a lot of former Milwaukee men from the electrified territory and I wondered if that was a term used to describe the electric locomotives. __._,_.___
