All - We could also talk about ice. Ice as used in reefers, especially when salt was added to lower the temperature. The resulting brine, dripping from the cars, wreaked havoc on trackwork and bridges. It was an on-going problem for mid-western railroads hauling fresh produce to the Chicago area. One attempted solution was to spray oil on the track, particularly on bridges. Early in my career I spent time with a bridge inspector who would take a quick look under the bridges on the westbound main and then spend a much longer time assessing the damage under the eastbound. Loaded reefers were
predominantly eastbounds. Much later in my career I was on a work train lifting deck plate girder panels out of a bridge over the Fox River (not CB&Q). The work was being done on the track that had been the eastbound until recent signaling changes made it bi-directional. The heavy
structural steel we lifted out looked like swiss cheese. Sorta' like the underside of your car after another Chicago winter.
