Also keep in mind, that some early steel underframe cars were reinforced
with truss rods, particularly head end passenger cars.

Thanks for that response. As there’s an RPO in the photo with what appear to be truss rods, it was presumed that the photo was taken before the 1916 U.S. Post Office minimum structural strength requirements for RPO’s.  However, the water tank looked potentially too modern.

I don't when they were first built, but the one at Herrin Junction was built in 1910, so they go back a ways.

Does anyone know when steel tanks such as the attached were first built.  I’m trying to date a photo taken at Anselmo, Ne.
