I was thinking of the wye at 14th Street rather than Aurora…… I don’t know if any trains got wyed at Aurora; I would guess not.   The turntable at the depot was used to turn the E units prior to push-pull. 

I don’t recall any pattern to power car placement “back in the day”…..a study of photos might reveal if there was any set end they were preferred.

“maximum field start” may have been the term….as I recall the conversation EMD did not like it.   E7s and E5s (and the EAs) did not have it which is why they weren’t used in commuter service regularly.
