It is a "requirement" for those who have the seniority and can do it acccurately.

Working the Asst. Chief Dispatchers job in Cicero you had to figure out the tonnage of a train out of St. Paul vis the power they had assigned to the train with a chart(not sure if I kept one or not) and then call the power desk (which was in St. Paul by then) and tell them you were cutting power off one train to enable the train to make it over the roller-coaster C&I. If no power was available sometimes we would have to set out cars at Savanna or send the train "Around the Horn" via Denrock and Mendota. One thing with a switch engine was they might not be able to make speed(no need for on a branch) but could PULL tonnage and a primary reason they were used on the coal branches in Northern Illinois Pete Using nicknames is still ok isn't it. There’s one other question I have about switchers assigned to Burlington. I know that NW-2s ran to Washington, but none were assigned according to the 1952 list. I have photos of 9219, 9232, 9240, and 9246 in Washington or on the branch line in the early 1950s. Were the NW-2s considered road switchers and assigned separately? I have photos of a GP-7 in Washington in the early 1950s, so I know that road switchers occasionally made the run.

I don't know it for fact but surmise the key lies in the assignment listed on the 3/6/52 assignment sheet for 9135 "Galesburg -Galva-New Boston". I'm thinking the routing would have been Burlington-Oquawka-Keithsburg-New Boston(all on the river) and then eastward Aledo-Alpha-Galva. Generally speaking Galesburg would have been on the hypotenuse of the triangle, and hence bypassed.
