At the 1934 wreck at Freeman, Illinois (see BB#35 @ page 64), all three of the head end crew members jumped before impact. All of them were killed. Their bodies were found a car length apart under the wreck. The engineer was the last to jump and his decapitated body was found under the tender. Ironically, their lanterns were found in the cab and were unbroken and still burning! It took a lot of guts to stay with a steam engine with 5000 gallons of boiling water in front of you.
