I had a friend of mine get caught between two freights while on the center platform that used to be at Belmont; it was not an experience he ever wanted to repeat!

At most locations, when the center platform was removed and there are no nearby grade crossings, one or two "pads" across M3 have been installed so that in a pinch passengers can be loaded on M2.  Naperville for some reason is a notable exception to this.

Michael is right on the track numbers
I believe METRA is the one that got rid of the center platforms in the name of SAFETY??  and killed the flexibility the tracks provided.  To cut down on maintenance cost crossovers and sidings were eliminated again killing the flexibility.

North is 1, south is 3.  I leave the rest of your questions to those more in the know.

In a book I recently purchased had a picture of the Naperville train station.  I was surprised to see that there was a track right up against the station itself and a platform between the souhtern most track and the middle track.  I am not sure how the Q numbered them, north to south as 1 2 3 or south to north as 1 2 3.  The platform also had a roof over it to provide some shelter from rain and snow.  When did the Q remove this platform and, from what I can see, realign the tracks?
