These units were regeared for freight service in 1955, and it has always baffled me why their boilers weren't removed and the units repainted into freight colors at that time -- but clearly they weren't. One would have to presume that the boilers were removed when the units were repainted into freight colors in 1958, as no photos I've seen of them in white indicate the presence of the boiler equipment, though as you say, it's impossible to tell in some photos.

Subject: [CBQ] F3 Steam Generator Removal
Anyone know when the steam generators were removed from the F3 sets originally built for CZ service? One of the cover photos for Al Holck's first volume on the Q's motive power shows one of the sets in 1957 still in aluminum paint and what appears to be the roof appurtences still in place. In later photos from 1958 on in Al's books as well as Spoor's volumes, when the units had been repainted in freight colors, the roof vents or whatever they were are not evident although it's hard to tell from the angle of the shots.
