I have a photograph of 9960 in the south yards at Christopher, Illinois on November 1, 1957, marked taken at 1:00 PM, on train #15, in passenger livery. You can see the boiler vent. It is on page 87 of BB 35. I'm sure of date because I have 15's train orders (run two hours late)  and clearance card for that date together with a message telling the crew to make a pick up of coal cars at Herrin Junction. The conductor Avon A. Bryant saved them because of the unusual power and gave to me shortly he died. The picture is marked John Gruber colection but I suspect that John Allen took it.

Thanks, Hol. I would have to concur with your assessment, barring photo evidence to the contrary.

I was thumbing through Mike Spoor's four volume set and discovered that he states in the middle caption on p.24 of his second volume that the boilers were removed, and the units were repainted, in 1955, but there are several published photos that show them in passenger livery after reassignment. Again, the cover photo on Al's book is dated 1957 and it sure appears that the rooftop boiler venting is still in place.

As always, Hol, you are an encyclopedia of knowledge of all things Q. Thanks again for the response.

Bob

One would have to presume that the boilers were removed when the units were repainted into freight colors in 1958, as no photos I've seen of them in white indicate the presence of the boiler equipment, though as you say, it's impossible to tell in some photos.

One of the cover photos for Al Holck's first volume on the Q's motive power shows one of the sets in 1957 still in aluminum paint and what appears to be the roof appurtences still in place. In later photos from 1958 on in Al's books as well as Spoor's volumes, when the units had been repainted in freight colors, the roof vents or whatever they were are not evident although it's hard to tell from the angle of the shots.
