Ray,
I am more of a fan of the Cumbres and Toltec. It is more of a mountain RR with
distant vistas while the D&S is a water level route in a canyon. I feel the
best direction is west bound from Antonito to Chama.
If you catch the fall color though I understand the D&S is great.
DEnver of course I am sure you will hit Caboose Hobbies.
Museum has changed a lot since 1968.
Other sites - C&Sng sites
Golden - Take hwy 6 up clear creek this is the old C&S ng line, you can see
road bed and bridge footings in some places.
Engine 60 in Idaho Springs.
Georgetown Loop ride.
Jefferson - Depot is now Real Estate office.
Como - Stone round house, Depot is being restored, White building next to depot
is the old RR hotel and now is a bed and breakfast also has a good lunch.
Buena vista - depot has been restored and moved to city park on west side of
hwy. Q waycar lettered Coiorado Midland.
Leadville - LC&S has ride up towards Fremont pass(Climax mine) on old narrow
gauge r/w standard gauged in 1943. Diesel power, Take a coat. Tickets in depot,
roundhouse north of depot.
Breckenridge - C&s eng #9 w/restored boxcar and ex White Pass and Youkon
roteary snow plow.
If you take the dirt road from Breckenridge over Boreas Pass to Como this is
mostly the old NG right of way, The section house at the summit has been
restored. (Check weather before going)
Gunnison - D&RG C-16 #268 is on display with a string of cars at museum on east
side.
