Most of them were re-engined with Caterpillar four stroke diesel engines that sounded like nothing else on the railroad. I'm afraid you are out of luck on sound chips. They were not quiet. If you have heard a D-7 Cat, you know how they sounded. From: Nelson Moyer <ku0a@mchsi.com> To: CBQ@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, March 16, 2012 5:06 PM Subject: [CBQ] Doodlebug Motors? I’d like to put sound decoders in my doodlebugs, and the only
sound file I’ve found that’s supposed to be for a doodlebug is a recording
of a Rolls Royce 250 hp 8 cylinder motor from QSI. QSI doesn’t specify
whether the motor is gas or diesel, but I would guess it’s a gasoline
motor.
The doodlebugs I’m interested in modeling are 9529, 9816, 9841
and 9849. All were built by Pullman-EMD with EMD 6 cylinder 275 hp engines.
9816, 9841 and 9849 were all rebuilt with diesel engines in the early 1050s, so
either gas-electric or diesel-electric sounds would be appropriate for circa
1950. My questions are what diesel engines were used for the rebuilds
(presumably EMD), what horsepower were they, and how would they sound relative
to a Rolls Royce 250 hp 8 cylinder motor? Unfortunately, it’s not
possible to listen to the QSI doodlebug sound file online, but you can listen
to it if you download the Q2Upgrade program and the sound file from the QSI
Solutions web site, then load the sound file into Q2Upgrade and play it. The sound
file has 10 notches that sound like a quiet diesel-electric in operation.
Having never heard a Q doodlebug, I have no idea how authentic the sounds are.
Nelson
