I'm no architect, but I believe the design of the depot is intended to, not really imitate, but echo just the kind of construction you described.  Masonry buildings of the time often had walls starting at the bottom with a base, often of a material and color different from the main part of the walls.  It served to give the building a gravity and sense of connection with the ground.  Often this was stone or other heavier looking materials.  Then came a lighter-weight section, the main section of the walls.  It tended to have smaller or more delicate appearing details and elements such as bricks instead of stones.  The wooden construction of the Mt. Morris depot echoes that approach.  The lower part of the walls is of wider novelty siding, and the upper of narrower clapboard.  The architect of the depot probably would be pleased that you saw the depot that way.

I could certainly see your point.  It makes sense that this would be an all wood depot.  The way the paint chipped really fooled me - I thought it looked like brick!

It looks like it's all wood to me.   The lower part of the sides and ends (below the belt rail) appears to me to be horizontal wood siding with relatively wide boards.  The upper parts (above the belt rail) appear to be wood siding with narrower boards.  The brick color coming through on the front appears to be the old red paint under the chipping white paint of later times.

It looks as if the front was a combination of cinder block and brick and the sides were cinder block and siding.  Anyone know for sure?  Any details on the station?  You have to love the old style depot sign.  It looks as though they never updated it to the black on a white background like the suburban stations received.
