Thanks Dave and John.  It would be the Burlington to Quincy train I was thinking of.  I'd seen a picture of a motorcar in Burlington that was presented as train #43 (which could have been, but certainly wasn't typical).  I then thought that maybe the Illinois-side train had the same number, being in another division.  So I'm left assuming that, at least on one occasion #9849, was used on train #43.
Thanks again.
Duncan

Duncan,

According to the March-April 1949 passenger timetable, the Burlington-Carthage-Quincy trains were Nos. 109 & 110.  This was a daily except Sunday motorcar run.  Trains 47 & 48 that John mentioned went all the way from St. Louis to Minneapolis (via Beardstown, Galesburg, Rock Island, Savanna & St. Paul).  The only Burlington to St. Louis trains were on the Iowa/Missouri side.

Can anyone tell me the numbers for the passenger train (often a motorcar) that run between Burlington and St. Louis on the Illinois-side of the Mississippi?

Duncan
