Michael:
Below is information that I copied from the Q's station map and R/W map. This
doesn't dispel the claim that at one time the double track extended further
east, but it does reflect the record of where the 2nd main started at the time
the information was placed on the map.
At the point of switch where the Milwaukee main (the Q actually owned the
switch) joined the Q's track at Survey Station 4109+13.4, there was an added
reference which stated "End Side Track, Begin Main Track", so it should have
been this point where the Q divided mileage between main track and side track.
This SS calculates to MP 77.8248 and is shown as MP 77.83 on the alignment
charts which you may or may not be familiar with.
Engineering and Operating records are not always consistent, but this reference
makes sense to me, because it would make clear to Milwaukee train crews that
they were operating on a main track and not a side track from a point west of
this switch. From a practical standpoint for the benefit of Q trains, the end
of double track might have been considered to be the point at which Q trains
would enter double track, or the easterly switch of the Left-Hand westerly
crossover, which was at SS 4111+63.9 (calculated as MP 77.8722, and shown at MP
77.86 on the alignment charts). If you have an alignment chart, note that the
second main was smaller rail (90#) between the Milwaukee switch and this
crossover.
In early April, I will be looking at some old C&A Division timetables at the
Newberry Library, and will try to remember to look up a reference to what the
old timetables show for the end of double track.

Subject: [CBQ] Rochelle IL double track
Last weekend while fanning at Steward IL I met a fellow who asked if I
could confirm a story he'd heard that the Q's double track thru
Rochelle had once extended into, and perhaps even thru Steward for a
short distance. Honestly I've never heard this, I had always assumed
that the double track ended at the former junction with the Milwaukee
Rd on the north side, but I was wondering if anyone knew better.
Thank you kindly,
Michael Matalis
