I note that (according to the List's statement of intent on Yahoo) "The purpose
of the list is for historians, railfans and railroad
modelers to discuss any topic related to the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
railroad and/or its predecessors."
We discuss new (and old) models and their qualities, we report and review
books, photos, tapes, discs and magazine articles that
sometimes have only a tenuous connection to the Burlington. We receive the
commercial adverts which may or may not be of particular
interest but rarely is there a complaint or any incivility. That is the nature
of a communications exchange emanating from hundreds
of members, that relates to more than a 100 years of history through a dozen
states, covering everything from turnouts to
turnbuckles, passes to passengers, diesels to dioramas, and tracks and tracts
of all kinds.
I would suggest that lemons, fakes, cinderellas, rarities, reproductions,
copies, collectables, or mis-described items that bear
CB&Q insignia or labels easily come within the purview of the List's purpose,
whether the items are on e-Bay or at any other sales
location.
I'd hate to buy something only to find a warning on an associated List to which
I am not a subscriber. Would it not be better to
keep comment on such offerings on this List where the maximum number of
potential consumers can be advised and educated, at least
until the volume of postings can be assessed? There was a recent discussion
about the value of the (separate) BRHS List - I suspect
that a separate group to cover this fairly narrow subject would wither for lack
of sufficient input by its subscribers to justify a
separate existence.
A simple code in the Subject line (as is the case with commercial goods) would
identify that the message related to such matters, so
deletion could be activated instantly if the member so wished. Perhaps "Lemon
aid", "Q is for Queries" or "Gerald's Gems"?
