List, As I examined this photo my attention was drawn to the building
directly behind the Louisiana depot and the letters "FR" can be seen
on the gable end of it. I know this was the freight house and would
venture a guess that it was probably an earlier depot that was just
moved to make room for the new brick depot pictured. I spent a lot of
time in this depot as I was a regular brakeman on the turn that
switched the Hercules plant south of town. Judging from the woodwork
etc, it was probably built around the turn of the century because I
pulled some of the same woodwork out of the master mechanic's office
in Hannibal that was built circa 1899 and 1900. Wish I could find
something in the Louisiana press to pinpoint this a little better.
Anyone out there have any more info on the subject? To recycle an old
depot into a freight house was common Q practice and I can personally
account for many of these occurrences. Namely, Shelbina, Mo,
Canton, Mo., Elsberry, Mo, Ft Madison, Ia., Bushnell, Ill., to name a
few. Archie Hayden
