Ever on the alert when it comes to old CB&Q freight cars
Drawing 1556G is dated Chicago, Ill March 25 1903 (title block)
in the drawing Class XM-8
Car nos. 92801 to 93699
"Torsion Proof Roof Applied to 500 cars (on drawing (("Torsion Proof Roof for
detail see 2700D))
Murphy Metal roff applied to 500 cars"
"Roof Construction for Application of Murphy Metal Roof per Print 2255"
shows Carlines 1 3/4 X 7 3/4 oak
lower course roof 13/16 X 5 1/4 pine Neponset roofing paper Upper Course
Roof 13/16 X 5 1/4 pine
lower course laid parallel with car with 3" X 11/4 Purlins (6 spaced edge(each
side) 1' 9 7/16 from edge and then next same spacing) upper is perpendicular
across roof 9' 8 1/2" Roof walk applied atop this with 2' 4" blocks with 2- 1
X 8 and single 1 X 6 walk boards. There is a complete list of roofing paper
sizes also.
One interesting feature of this car of course it is of wood construction.
Second is in the posts of the walls
Corner post (5 3/4 X 4 3/4 with rabbit cut out of inside for interior sheeting)
and next (2 1/2 X 2 5/8)((ladder post)) are sheathed over with posts (5 3/4 X
4
3/4) 3(4' 4 3/8 from corner post), 4, and 5(spaced 32 7/16" from edges of
posts)
in wall being the same size but flush on inside and stick out of wall about 1/2
inch
Makes for an interesting looking car I would live to build but while I normally
work in O Scale(1/4") I would love to build a car with cut away area to show
detail in Live Steam size (7 1/2" gauge) so car would be about five foot long
and you would be able to see details. This since our move to South Carolina on
a 10.5 acre retirement place. My wife just has to find a full time job so the
bank will allow us to build a house and shop. We now rent and have just enough
space to model let alone build a layout.
Attached is a list of drawings I found in a friends storage unit in Pekin(he
lives in Ft. Worth area) I have now which he wants to donate to Galesburg RR
Museum(we both worked for Q later BN and bnSF both retired)
I also have the following
1557 Elev and floor 20' 4-wheel Way Car
1516 Interior arrangement 30 foot drovers car
1515 30 foot Way Car
1763 General plan and elevation 40' 6" Steel Flat
1948 General plan 50' 6" 40 ton Auto Car outside steel framing
1600 50 ton Steel Gondola with drop bottom doors Cambria Steel Co. 1903
1534 40 ton Twin Hopper Car ACF (wood car)
1548 40 ton low flat car
Have not looked yet but need to look for a place to get them copied
May have a couple more in storage??
Steve

Does the drawing for the XM-8 identify which cars had which roofs, and what is
the date of the drawing?
