Look on the drawings normally they had two layers so the board edges over
lapped. The boards were grooved to allow the moisture to run between the two
layers sometimes building paper was placed between the two layers.
Even most early metal roofs had a wood sub roof
Drawing 1760 for 36' stock cars shows angle roof purlins with wood roof
length-wise to car
Drawing 1556G for XM-8 has two roof styles. 13/4 X 7 3/4 car lines with a car
liner(No details) and two roof layers. 500 cars with wood roofs and 500 with
metal roofs
Drawing 1948 for 50' 6" outside steel framing has two layers of wood roof with
Queenan & Murphy roofs with all the neat little metal plates to attach the ends
of the metal plates on the eaves.
In reading White's "The American Railroad Freight Car" he talks about both wood
and canvas painted with paint and sand sprinkled on for fire protection from
sparks, and sheet zinc with soldered joints.
I have the FM-14A flat car built ready for the paint shop just have to work on
building Q100 for it(Same bulletin)

Subject: [CBQ] Wood Car Roof Construction Question

I'm scratch building a Class XB-1 barrel car from drawings in BB#25 and
Zephyr #56, and I have a question about roof construction. The 1895 Car
Builders' Dictionary shows detailed drawings of a 34 ft. stock car,
presumably of similar construction to the original horse cars that the XB-1
barrel cars were rebuilt from, since the horse cars were built in 1890 and
rebuilt in 1907. The stock car roof was covered with 7/8 in. x 5 1/2 in.
boards running perpendicular to the center line. What waterproofing method
(if any) would have been used on a stock car or horse car roof circa 1890?
Same question for a barrel car circa 1907.

Nelson
