I'm scratch building a Class XB-1 barrel car from drawings in BB#25 and Zephyr #56, and I have a question about roof construction. The 1895 Car Builders' Dictionary shows detailed drawings of a 34 ft. stock car, presumably of similar construction to the original horse cars that the XB-1 barrel cars were rebuilt from, since the horse cars were built in 1890 and rebuilt in 1907. The stock car roof was covered with 7/8 in. x 5 1/2 in. boards running perpendicular to the center line. What waterproofing method (if any) would have been used on a stock car or horse car roof circa 1890? Same question for a barrel car circa 1907. Nelson ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
