As far as the bed goes they were quite often used by extra or relief operators
between shifts at the end of a long commute.
We had one in the locker room at Congress Park used by section and MOW. I used
it for the two weeks when I first started there and had to be to
COMPASS(computer) school in Cicero at 8AM. I would sleep on the train in (one
day woke up when the train stopped at Cicero) attend school till noon then ride
out to CP and sack out in the Locker Room. Frank(the agent) would come and get
me when my shift started at 3PM till 11pm Sleep going home on the train to
start all over again the next day(No Hours of Service account breaking in and
not a train order job)
Steve retired again in SC
and time to sack out

Subject: [CBQ] Depot interior question
List last Saturday I had the opportunity to see the interior of the CB&Q depot
in Milton, IA. In the freight room was a small room
suspended from the rafters and accessible via a ladder fastened to the wall. I
was told a bed was found in the room, but that
would have been when the town took over the depot. The railroad stopped running
in Milton in 1969, I have no idea when the town
acquired the building.
I have created a new photo album "Milton IA" and uploaded two photos I took of
this room. I can get access and take additional
photos if needed.
Does anyone have any ideas of what the room was used for and why it was built
the way it was built?
