Tom,
The passenger cars are from the Budd pre war coaches the Burlington bought
in a couple of orders, 1938 and 1940, not 100% sure of the dates. They are not
the later "standard" of 85'. They are 80" long cars. And yes all of those pre
war Budd cars didn't have the full skirting that showed up with the 1947
Budd Twin Zephyr cars. The heavyweight car in the consist is one of nine
heavyweights rebuilt by the Burlington, they were known as SSS Cars (Simulated
Stainless Steel). Originally painted in shadow stripping they were equipped
with
roller bearings, tight lock couplers, and thermal pane windows.
For modeling these cars in HO scale, brass is the only answer. For the BRHS
many years ago Oriental Limited produced for sale by the society the SSS
coaches. You can still find them today although pretty rare and they do fetch
a
pretty good price. I traded one extra SSS car that I had for a Shoreham Shops
streamlined Q RPO.
The pre way Budds have been produced by Oriental Limited and Shoreham Shops.
Although they are not 100% prototype.
Although used in Zephyr service the SSS cars found their use to be more on
the secondary trains rather than the DZ, CZ, or TCZ. Although the pre war
Budds, were used on all the Zephyrs trains as traffic required.
