Paul,
P/U is "Pick Up".
Was used from Chicago to Savanna or shorter sections as
wanted. #81 went West and P/U went the East way as a turn.
"Pick Up" was only used from Savanna to Chicago. Have no
record of other usage. For example "H&T" was used by North
St. Louis to East St. Louis. At the same time "Switch Run"
was done from North St. Louis to Ft. Bellefontaine. Another
unusual place.

Thanks for your reply. As it happens I am joining BRHS (well, the check is
in the mail anyway) but it is always nice to get a personal invitation!! It is
also helpful that you pointed out some of the resources that are available from
BRHS, like back-issues of bulletins, as I was not aware of them. Your
description of Rockford branch was very helpful to me, and I hadn't thought
about checking the Milwaukee Road society but will do so at your suggestion.
I am pretty sure that "w/f" means "way-freight" in your note, but what is
"P/U"? .
Regards,
Paul
