As Karl states slag ballast did work to hold and support track. But I will
tell you from first hand experience it wasn't fun or comfortable to hike
on,especially on the shoulder of the stuff. I never have, but I always thought
it
must have been like walking on volcanic rock, dusty, porous and lose.
The positive thing about slag was when wet it wasn't slippery, unlike the
granite chips that followed.
On the other hand it was dusty when dry, unlike the granite.
But my vote goes to cinders as the best overall ballast for non mailine use.
It drained well, was nice and soft to walk on,in winter it absorbed thermal
energy so the snow melted quickly and of course best of all was where it came
from !
