Guys for photographic verification of slag colors(note the plural) go to
Mike Spoors Color Guide for Q equipment and on page 102 there is a shot of a
w/c on the west end of trk 13 in the East Yard at Eola. In the background are
the slag piles that were accumulated from cars on the "slag hole" tracks (2)
at Eola.
This is new slag coming directly from the mills.Yes, I'm sure as I still
have my notes on the subject from an old interview. The slag came in from N.W.
Indiana mills in foreign gons, unloaded and stored there until distributed on
the tracks by work trains during the season. When BN changed to the granite
ballast the old "slag hole" tracks became dead storage for the Reclamation
plant inbound cars.
Note the shade variations from light gray to almost brown. Also note the
new slag along trk 13 that appears to be very light gray to almost white.
