I think what you are referring to...at least as I remember, is a flat blade
shovel?with turned up edges to be used for shoveling and a cast iron hand grip
on the end of the handle used for tamping.
Someone once said..."what's the job description of a section
hand"??...answer..."they do anything nobody else wants to do"...Track work has
got to be some of the hardest work anywhere as Dale points out.

Speaking of cinders, are there any old hand tampers around? When I was
waiting to go into the service in 1945, I worked on a section gang on a
branch, and spent most of my ten-hour days (6-day weeks) tamping ties with a
short-handled spade. My back still hurts just thinking about it. By far the
