Code 83 is a good way to begin. When I started my current
collection/layout in 1982, I went with Code 100 and now my investment
in track and turnouts is really too great to change over entirely to
a finer track. If I were to start again, I'd certainly go with Code
83 or Code 75. Are you operating analog or DCC?

One of your very best investments would be to join the Historical
Society. The amount of specialized information, bibliographies and
networking with knowledgeable folks is more than worth the annual
fee.

Keep it modest and focussed, and proceed by stages. Some guys try to
do too much (model every industry, every station, etc.) and get
stalled by benchwork or wiring or scenery. You should pick up some
of the Kalmbach and other books about layout planning, and look
for "Model Railroad Planning 2008" in March. That's an annual from
Kalmbach that's usually full of interesting ideas. There's also a
track planning special interest group in the National Model Railroad
Association, and a Yahoo forum for the group as well.
