For the same reason a lot of cities had/have 2 or more RR's - competition for
what was or is a good bit of business. In the case of Winona, Q served Watkins
(the spice & vanilla people) with street running to a downtown depot as well as
industries on south side where Milw served west side & some of the riverfront.
GB&W also found business in Winona albeit a small amount; more the desire to
have 2 west end outlets - Q & Milw. Actually C&NW people would tell you
traditionally Milw was 'their town' as at one time there were large car shops
there for the Winona & St. Pete - a C&NW predecessor. I.E. Winona had 4 RR's
in its heyday! (and NONE of them directly served Bubs - the local brewery near
Sugar Loaf.) RR's show in up in strange places: IC was in Madison, Wis & Sioux
Falls, SD (along with Rock island!); the Q in Paducah, KY, Milw in Terre haute,
IN, etc. Gerald

Could someone tell me why there would be a Q depot in Winona considering that's
a Milwaukee town. John----- Original Message ----- From:

passenger stop, just across the Missippi river fromWinona. Passengers were
bussed across on the highway bridge from theCB&Q depot in downtown Winona.I
don't know if the GB&W crossing had the same name and tower control. From the
GB&W crossing the line west across the river into Winona wasshared ownership,
under the name "Winona Bridge Railway." I believe itwas 2/3 CB&Q, 1/3 GB&W.
There also was a CNW crossing adjacent to EastWinona. The railbed and remnants
of the bridge still exist.Jim Anklan--- In
