Al,
I was working at EMD at that time. The 4449 was, indeed repaired. As
I recall, the damage occurred on the left front corner. IIRC, one of
EMD's employees took a damaged part home and made a replacement in
his own machine shop. There were photos of the damage and repair work
in EMD's in house employee newspaper, "The Streamliner". While the
locomotive was at La Grange, it was also equipped with multiple unit
control (MU), so that a diesel locomotive coupled behind the 4449
could be controlled from the steam locomotive's cab. Later, a number
of other excursion steam locomotives were so equipped, but I think
the 4449 was the first.
