Charlie, everyone I know of has had problems with step 2 of your
solution - otherwise, it is a no-brainer. You are right of course,
the train name board was a different alloy (or because it wasn't
formed, it appeared different due to the non-stress on the alloy), so
the underlying surface doesn't matter, so an air eraser should
work. If one is had. But with the other methods, chemicals, the
hard part has been keeping the desired affect from straying as the
chemical typically has a bad effect on the tape for the same reasons
it has on the lettering. Because just rubbing it doesn't seem to
work, so "letting it sit" seems to be the method, and then that leads
down a host of problem paths.
I haven't heard of anyone being able to take off the lettering on the
train board successfully. The name board is obvious as are the
ownership plates.
