The elevation thru Aurora is unlike most as most are of the Great Wall
type(East of Cicero to Union Ave) a wall is built and fill dumped between with
track on top
Aurora was one of the first to be built on piers so the land below was useable.
The Sears Garden and Farm store use to be underneath now used mostly for
parking.
The project was forced on the railroad by the city and state after accidents to
autos coming down the hills on to the tracks at the bottom and even with
flagmen at each crossing there were still accidents acct the brakes on early
autos.
Eola Yard was built first to move the switch yard from the shop area to a
better area.
An old rock quarry was filled in and the Broadway Depot built on the fill.
There were two track thru town on what is now the North or west side of the
elevation then the Cement was mixed near where later the depot was built and
moved via rail to the formes as it progressed thru town. If the depression had
not came along there was plans for two more tracks to be added to the three
built(now only two)
Hol has an article of mine in the works someday

Subject: [CBQ] Aurora Q
Group, is the elevated track that goes thru downtown Aurora Ill on
fill or steel work? Particularily interested in the track east of the
depot on the curve by the old Milner Hotel.
Thanks!
