I belive it was in service untill the late 70's--the bridge was part
of the original main line to the west. When I was a kid(70/80's), I
hung around the depot/tower frequently and I remeber seeing BN
switchers coming across from the west side with loads and emptys from
the business such as The Beacon News and White & Todd Lumber that were
serviced down the street(alley)trackage on the west side-(would make a
great switching layout itself), they also dropped cars Builders Supply
on the east side--mainly Rio Grande gons if I remember correctly. And
yes, it connected to the main line just north of the tower on a
'slight' grade, just prior to going over the elevation through town.
The line went from the tower west across the river, connected to the
west side street trackage to the north, then south past a few
industries by Grizwald(?)Feeds then made a second connection by the
Galesburg-C&I split, behind Richard Wilcox, on a heavy grade. In the
50's there were a quite a few more industries both sides of the river,
plus a connection to the small C&NW yard on the north end of the
street trackage, just north of New York St. where the Ywca and the
casino resides today. I'm sure others on the list have more indepth
insite to all that was there during the 50's, but I hope this helps.
