I've often wondered if things like this were actually mistakes, or
attempts to cut costs by re-using pieces that a company has already
made for a previous product, hoping no one will notice.

Does anyone know if costs can actually be reduced by re-use of pieces,
maybe by not having to make molds for slightly different ones?
