Bill,
Sunset had the three rail version on display at the O Scale meet in
Arlington Heights,IL, last Saturday. Sunset seems to have a difficult
time doing "everything" right on their Q models. Case in point was
their middle series O5 #5614 released last year which had several
notable and very visible errors. The hudson, while generally well
proportioned, also has problems. Two errors stood out in my mind.
First, the Elesco feedwater heater is much too narrow (it looks like it
belongs on an NYC K class pacific) across the top of the smoke box.
This gives the model an odd appearance from the front and causes the
large pipes off the ends of the heater to be at a sharp angle rather
than almost straight down into the smokebox as on the prototype.
Second, on the sample shown, the headlight bracket sticks out much too
far. Maybe the production ones will be better.
Both problems are correctable, but the Elesco will require a new
Precision casting to make it look right. A friend of mine who was with
me, cancelled his order after seeing the model. I haven't made up my
mind yet.
