-Greetings group:
I did a little figuring of my own regarding the Q's streamlined
observation cars, I came up with a total of 27 cars if you include
the business car and 2 C&S-FW&D cars. As far as I am aware, the
Burlington didn't own any of the 1950 EMPIRE BUILDER MOUNTAIN
series
cars. I also noted that there were a total of 4 dining-parlor cars.
1. CB&Q 570 coach-parlor obs ZEPHYR (9900) 1934
2. CB&Q 571 coach-parlor obs TWIN ZEPHYR (9901) 1935
3. CB&Q 102 coach-parlor obs TWIN ZEPHYR (9902) 1935
4. TOM SAWYER coach-parlor obs MARK TWAIN ZEPHYR 1935
5. JUNO parlor obs TWIN ZEPHYRS 9904 1936
6. JUPITER parlor obs TWIN ZEPHYRS 9905 1936
7. SILVER FLASH parlor-lounge obs DENVER ZEPHYR 1936
8. SILVER STREAK parlor-lounge obs DENVER ZEPHYR 1936
9. SILVER STAR dining-parlor obs GENERAL PERSHING ZEPHYR 1939
10. SILVER SPIRIT dining-parlor obs SILVER STREAK ZEPHYR 9909 1940
11. SILVER BOWL dining-lounge obs C&S-FW&D TEXAS ZEPHYR 1940
12. SILVER TRAY dining-lounge obs C&S-FW&D TEXAS ZEPHYR 1940
13. SILVER HOURS dining-parlor obs AKSARBEN ZEPHYR (east) /
EXPOSITION FLYER (west) 1940
14. SILVER FOUNTAIN dining-parlor obs AKSARBEN ZEPHYR (east) /
EXPOSITION FLYER (west) 1940
15. MARIAS RIVER 2dbrm-1drm-buf-lounge obs EMPIRE BUILDER 1947
16. SILVER VIEW parlor dome obs TWIN ZEPHYR 1947
17. SILVER VISTA parlor dome obs TWIN ZEPHYR 1947
18. MINNEAPOLIS CLUB 4db-1com-buf-lounge obs NORTH COAST LIMITED 1948
19. SILVER HORIZON 3dbrm-1drm-dome-buf-lounge obs CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR
1949
20. SILVER PENTHOUSE 3dbrm-1drm-dome-buf-lounge obs CALIFORNIA
ZEPHYR 1949
21. SILVER SOLARIUM 3dbrm-1drm-dome-buf-lounge obs CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR
1949
22. SILVER LOOKOUT 3dbrm-1drm-dome-buf-lounge obs CALIFORNIA
ZEPHYR / AK-SAR-BEN ZEPHYR 1952
23. BURLINGTON Business car 1953
24. SILVER TERRACE parlor dome obs KANSAS CITY ZEPHYR 1953
25. SILVER TOWER parlor dome obs KANSAS CITY ZEPHYR 1953
26. SILVER CHATEAU parlor-dome-lounge obs DENVER ZEPHYR 1956
27. SILVER VERANDA parlor-dome-lounge obs DENVER ZEPHYR 1956
I have a few questions regarding the dining-parlor cars SILVER STAR,
SILVER SPIRIT, SILVER HOURS and SILVER FOUNTAIN the dining-lounge
cars SILVER BOWL and SILVER TRAY. I have not seen floor plans for
all these cars, only SILVER STAR, did they all possess restrooms
separating the dining and parlor/ lounge observation section?
"Café-parlor/lounge observation cars" have always
intrigued and
confused me.
Were the seats in the observation always sold as first class parlor
seats? I assume they were on day trains like the GENERAL PERSHING and
the SILVER STREAK, but what about overnight trains like the TEXAS
ZEPHYR and the ZEPHYR-ROCKET?
If not were coach passengers allowed to use them as lounge seats?
Coach passengers were permitted to use the dining facilities, were
they not?
Thank you,
Michael
