My grandfather was a miner in Iowa in the 1910's - 1920's and he used to
speak of using old stock cars to haul coal. I asked how they loaded them,
he said that they had a chute rigged to bring the coal in through one of the
doors and it was shoveled by hand to the ends. I think he said that they
only filled them about half way. He also said, not surprisingly, the miners
hated the stock cars and would beat them around as much as possible in the
hopes that they would be condemned. Apparently they were sometimes
successful as he spoke of the railroad (I think) burning some of the cars at
the mine to salvage the steel.
Also, in a book I have about the Muscatine North and South railroad (sorry I
can't remember the author), there is a picture of an old stock car being
loaded with walnut stumps to be used in the production of gun stocks.
Have a good day,
Bill Allen
