SilvrDome@a... mentions the plastic and wood interiors of the 1956
sleepers. Was this plastic Fiberglas?
Fiberglas was extensively used in the Slumbercoaches. This, in
itself was exciting, because Fiberglas was just coming into its own
as a replacement for steel and aluminum in car and boat
construction. If you remember, the Chevrolet Corvette sports car,
introduced about the same time, bragged an all Fiberglas body.
Boy did I have fun showing off the slumbercoach Loch Lomond to a
Japanese Engineer employed by the Sumitomo Corporation in 1984 when
he was riding the Lake Shore Limited with me on his way to California
concerning matters relating to that company's reequipping of
CalTrans' former SP peninsula commuter service. I showed him how
America used Fiberglas in the 1950's and he was impressed.
