Archie,
I have in my garage the sign from the West end of the West
passenger shelter and stairwell at Congress Park and the
East end sign from the Cochrane WI depot.
They are very heavy and not in a position to look at too much
right now. In my previous house they were hung in the garage.
The Congress Park sign is about 12" high, the Cochrane sign is
about 16" high. Both are on lumber about 1 1/2" thick. The
actual signs are heavy sheet metal, probably galvanized. It was
first painted with a silver/gray paint that is rough to the
touch and is reflective. The actual letters were painted over
that full coat.
Both signs are attached to heavy metal straps, (maybe 2" X 1/4"),
one about a foot and a half from each end. These extend outward
of the edges of the board and are offset at each end so when the
sign is lagged down the back of the board does not touch the
surface.
IIRC the sheet metal is nailed to the board with roofing type
nails.
Also have the "Burlington Route" sign from Aurora Tower. Got it
when it was replaced with a smaller sheet metal version. The one
I have has no sheet metal and is strictly painted wood with no
mounting straps. Was attached by holes in each corner.

Dave Lotz has an old book of Burlington Route standard signs in the archives
which I donated a few years ago. As I recall, the letters were shown to be
10 inches tall. Am I correct on that recollection, Dave?
