Rupert,

Furniture, by it's nature, is a very light commodity. During the 70's
Ethan Allen was shipping a couple cars a week from somewhere
in the Southeast to unload at the team tracks along the street at
Downers Grove. Usual weight in a 40' standard box car was about
#12,000. Sometimes only half that. These cars contained furniture
in cardboard shipping boxes. If you think about how a wooden
kitchen chair would fit in a box you can see that it would be mostly
air. That two inches might allow you to stack 3 high instead of
2 high. Every little bit helps.

If the traffic man can go to the customer and say, "We built some
boxcars with higher cubic capacity just for your business", it
might draw a few loads the CB&Q way.

I'm sure you have seen trailers with the width or an assurance that
they were full width and height all the way to the front stenciled
on the back doors. Just a form of advertising.

Russ
