heard this accident cussed and discussed most of my younger years. 
caused men to take sides, IIRC. 14 was still carrying passengers 
at that time and several? were killed. thru some up above in the old 
metal luggage racks and did awful things to them in those old 
heavyweight cars. hero was condr or flagman who went back with a 
broken leg to flag and stopped a freight. (it didn't break a rail?? 
or something) sorry can't remember his name. (trying to say seaburg) 
lead unit went over on its right side and acted just like a plow and 
a funnel. filled that cab on the e unit with dirt, forget how hard 
they say it packed it in there. investigators took every pound of 
dirt out and sifted it looking for clues. i read the online account 
a few years ago and it does not sound like the same wreck i heard 
discussed back in the mid 50's. probably said more than i should out 
of respect to departed west ottumwa men.
