Good day to all,
Back in the 80's I helped with some cosmetic restoration projects on the
3006 in Galesburg. I can say that from the inside the firebox appears to be
sound. The largest hurdle to overcome in restoring the old gal to operation
would be replacing the stay bolts, especially the flexible stays over the
crownsheet as these were quite corroded.
Like Warren the rest is only heresay from my father and a friend of his who
worked for the Q from the 40's into the 80's. According to him, the 3000's
were servicable or nearly so, when they were put on display. I have heard
that some railroads would replace the brass axle bearings with blocks of
wood after the engine was on display, but this was not the case with the
3006.
