According to Burlington Bulletin #13 (Shovelnoses):
"Units 9906A and B gained immediate fame when on Oct. 23, 1936, they eclipsed
the record time of Zephyr 9900's renowned dawn-to-dusk run from Denver to
Chicago. The 3,000-horsepower duo piloted an abbreviated six-car Denver Zephyr
the 1,017 miles west from Chicago to Denver in 12 hours, 12 minutes, 27 seconds
for an overall average speed of 83.33 miles per hour. And a top speed of 116
mph was reached near Brush, Colo."
The Bulletin doesn't list the engineer or the exact consist of the train, but
there is a photo of the train shortly after arriving in Denver on the 23rd.
9906A was Silver King, 9906B was Sliver Queen.

Subject: [BRHSlist] Zephyr
During the 1930's the Q set a new speed record with I believe the Denver
Zephyr. Can someone supply me with the date and the name of the train
and engineer of that record. I believe the engineer was killed some
years later in a wreck while running the Zepher.
Our kindergarten class (ca 1936/37) made a mock-up of the train fo
parents day and the engineer visitedour show. I believe his name was
Boyer.
Thanks.
